Summer capital, Srinagar witnessed a vibrant start to the “She cycling” campaign, a nationwide Bicycle Literacy drive for women, initiated by BYSC India in collaboration with Directorate of Tourism, Kashmir.

The campaign kicked off on May 4th at the picturesque Jhelum River Front (Lal Mandi), drawing enthusiastic participation from women of all ages and professions. The inauguration ceremony, graced by Deputy Director Recreation, Malik Wasim, and Deputy Director Kashmir, Dr. Mantasha Binti Rashid, highlighted the significance of empowering women through cycling.

Mantasha Binti Rashid emphasized that cycling not only promotes a healthier lifestyle but also contributes to environmental conservation and enhances women’s mobility.

A key highlight of the event was the presence of Shahla Ali Sheikh, an entrepreneur and avid sports enthusiast, who underscored the importance of integrating cycling into daily life, making it a lifestyle rather than a mere activity.

Under the expert guidance of Zeenath M.A, She Cycling Senior National Project Coordinator, and Prakash P. Gopinath, former Bicycle Mayor of Trivandrum, 18 girls and women learned and practiced cycling on the riverfront. Zeenath’s experience in teaching over 800 women in Kerala added to the program’s credibility and impact.

The training, scheduled for five days in the morning and evening, aims to encourage more women to take up cycling as a green and eco-friendly mode of transportation. Deputy Director Tourism Kashmir urged women to join the program, highlighting the many benefits of cycling. Prakash, who has cycled across various countries and states in India, expressed his delight at experiencing the beauty of Kashmir, especially its pleasant weather and warm people, making his cycling journey here truly memorable.

The “She cycling” campaign in Srinagar is not just about learning to ride a bicycle; it’s about breaking barriers, promoting health and wellness, and empowering women to lead more independent and sustainable lives.
